Social and ecological processes are intertwined
All forests are utilized by humans. Trees are harvested for timber, or killed to create deadwood for insects; rotation ages are set to maximize runoff from water catchments; some forests are protected for recreation benefits, some are managed for fibre production. Forest development is determined by a mix of natural processes and human activity. Humans are not separate from Nature, but part of Nature. Social and ecological processes are intertwined. The push to maintain “virgin” or "pristine" environments without humans, and the belief that fenced-in protected areas inevitably produce good conservation outcomes, is a product of Western thought about the separation of humans from nature.
