The business sector has significant implications for the realisation of children’s rights in Africa, both negative and positive. While businesses contribute to beneficial societal outcomes and economic growth in ways that support the realisation of the rights of children, their operations, products and policies can also adversely impact children’s rights. The business-related risks that impede the realization of children’s rights range from child labour to life-threatening events such as poisoning from contaminated pharmaceuticals, as well as environmental degradation caused by the oil and other industries. As trade, manufacturing, and investment rapidly expand in the region, often outpacing the regulatory and protective capacities of many governments, addressing the child-rights concerns of business operations in the region warrants serious attention.
Against this backdrop and as part of the African Children’s Charter Project (ACCP), the Children’s Rights Project at the Dullah Omar Institute for Constitutional Law, Governance and Human Rights is initiating a Webinar Series on Children’s Rights and Business, which is aimed at building and sustaining a focused Africa-wide discourse on the subject. This will be a collaborative series in partnership with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, its working groups, partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
